Oftentimes the parables are seen as some pithy stories to help common people understand theological themes. Yet, when we look into their cultural significance, we see that Jesus is laying out amazing theology that sticks in our minds and helps us see truths about God's kingdom. We believe that this series will help us in our desire to be a church where God changes lives in community.

He focuses on how Jesus is using this story to undermine ethnic biases and calling his followers to show mercy to enemies, especially racial and political enemies. He pulls much of his commentary from the books "Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes" by Kenneth Bailey, "Misreading Scripture Through Western Eyes" by E. Randolph Richards and Brandon O'Brien, and "One Blood" by John Perkins.
